Stretch Marks Blog Online

Many people associate stretch marks only with pregnancy or being overweight, but this isn't necessarily true. Children and teens sometimes get stretch marks as a result of rapid growth, and so do weight lifters (both men and women). That's why so many people ask the question - "is there a way to eliminate stretchmarks? Here are the facts:

Skin is normally elastic like a rubber band. When a rubber band is stretched too far, though, it snaps. Similarly, when skin is stretched too far, it tears. Because the underlying layers of skin actually tear, then form a scar, it's nearly impossible to eliminate stretchmarks completely. However, the best stretch mark treatments can fade the scars, making them less obvious, and/or practically invisible.

One way to do this is by applying creams, lotions, or essential oils to the skin on a regular basis. Many creams have exfoliating agents in them which helps them remove the top layer of dead skin and reduce the intensity of the marks.

Some companies claim to offer products, like combinations of essential oils or "miracle creams" that actually heal the scars and cause them to disappear. In reality, though, while some creams can decrease the brightness or help the scars to fade, the products don't entirely eliminate stretchmarks. Products that actually help tighten the skin, as well as offer a fading element are the best bet.

Another option is to try medical treatments that help to eliminate stretchmarks. The riskiest way to do this is abdominoplasty. This is an abdominal surgery in which a small amount of fat is removed with the stretched skin. This only works, though, for people who are only a little over their ideal body weight, and who have little fat that needs to be removed.

Dermabrasion is a non-surgical medical treatment in which the outer layer of skin is removed, or exfoliated. Dead skin is peeled away, and again, this fades the appearance, but does not entirely eliminate stretchmarks.

The reviews on laser treatments are mixed. Some people say that laser treatments can decrease the intensity of stretch marks by as much as 50 percent, while others say that they are much less effective than this. Most laser surgeons and other doctors, though, agree that current laser treatment procedures won't entirely eliminate stretchmarks either.

The best way to keep from getting stretchmarks is to maintain healthy skin and keep your weight down. Drink large amounts of water so that the skin stays healthy and hydrated, and use creams and lotions with good quality moisturizers, and firming properties, to maximize the skin's elasticity and prevent stretch marks from occurring in the first place.
